Causes of Hair Loss for Men & Women

The cycle of hair growth

The normal cycle of hair growth lasts for 2 to 6 years. About 90 percent of the hair on your scalp is growing and 10 percent is in a resting phase at any one time. After 2 to 3 months, the resting hair falls out and new hair starts to grow in its place.

It is normal to shed some hair each day. However, some people may experience excessive hair loss. They can be men, women and children.

What causes excessive hair loss?

1. Chronic Telogen Effluvium

It's seen most often in women because they lose blood during their menstrual cycle.

Not replacing the iron lost during your period causes you to have an iron deficiency. The Iron deficiency causes you to lose your hair. You'll see noticeable thinning and bald spots in patches with this type of hair loss.

Eating green leafy vegetables or raw meat (with orange juice) will usually give you enough iron to combat this kind of hair loss.

2. Androgenic Hair Loss - Dihydrotestosterone (DHT)

Androgenic Hair Loss causes noticeable round bald patches in your hair starting in the front and extending across the top of your head. This type of hair loss is considered genetic. This means that if your parents suffered from hair loss then you probably will too. The genetic factor inherited from either parent coupled with other variables such as age, will signal the hair follicle to start producing an enzyme known as 5-alpha reductase. This enzyme 5-Alpha-Reductase is primarily responsible for the conversion of the male sex hormone Testosterone into the hormone Di - Hydro - Testosterone (DHT).

This DHT hormone shrinks and stops the growth of hair follicles and starts the process of your losing hair. This is one the of more significant known causes of hair loss in men and women and is responsible for pattern baldness.

Both men and women have hormones DHT. However, since women have fewer male sex hormones in their system, female pattern hair loss is characterized by hair thinning and not balding in specific areas like that of men.

There are some herbs that are popular "dht blockers". Saw Palmetto, Nettle Root and Dong Quai just to name a few. Hair loss products known as DHT Blockers can prevent DHT from affecting the hair follicle.

3. Hormone related hair loss

Hormonal problems may cause hair loss Hair loss may occur if male or female hormones, known as androgens and estrogens, are out of balance. If your thyroid gland is overactive or underactive, your hair may fall out. Correcting the hormone imbalance may stop your hair loss. This hair loss usually can be helped by treatment thyroid disease.

Many women notice hair loss about 3 months after they've had a baby. During pregnancy, high levels of certain hormones stop shedding their usual amount of hair. When the hormones return to pre-pregnancy levels, then hair falls out and the normal cycle of growth and loss starts again.

Some women lose their hair from taking a hormone called DHEA. A few women often mistake DHEA for other supplements (like DHA). You should avoid taking this drug at all cost.

4. Illness & Medication

Some medicines can cause hair loss. This type of hair loss improves when you stop taking the medicine. They include blood thinners (also called anticoagulants), medicines used in chemotherapy to treat cancer, medicines used for gout, vitamin A (if too much is taken), birth control pills and antidepressants.

Certain infections can cause hair loss. Fungal infections of the scalp can cause hair loss in children. The infection is easily treated with antifungal medicines.

Hair loss may occur as part of an underlying disease, such as lupus or diabetes. Since hair loss may be an early sign of a disease, it is important to find the cause so that it can be treated.

5. Stress

Stress results in a high proportion of follicles to enter the resting stage. A few months after the stressful event, all the resting follicles begin to shed hairs. This can cause loss of hair suddenly and unexpectedly.

6. Alopecia areata

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition. It attacks the hair follicles, disrupts the normal growth process, and causes loss of hair. It starts with spots of balding around the head, and may ends with the entire head.
